When April's infant son began suffering from eczema, an unexpected journey was set into motion. A local pharmacist suggested that April stop using commercial soaps, laundry detergents, and skin products, recommending instead that she make these items herself at home. With a heavy dose of determination, April set out to teach herself the art of soap-making. What started as a kitchen experiment soon evolved into the birth of Old Whaling Company, a company now celebrated for its unique, handcrafted bath and body products.
Launching her business from scratch, April dove into completely new territory. Neither she nor her family had any prior experience in the home and body product industry. Despite this, she was driven by a long-held dream of owning her own business. The challenge of creating something beneficial for her family, coupled with her newfound passion for soap-making, provided the perfect opportunity to realize this dream.
In 2012, April and her family moved to Charleston. It was here that Old Whaling Company was formally established, and Charleston has remained its home ever since. Today, Old Whaling Company's production team operates out of West Ashley, a neighborhood suburb of downtown Charleston, where all the products are carefully crafted.
The scents of its products are one of the brand’s standout features. Inspired by past travels, coastal living, and the essence of Charleston itself, these fragrances capture the spirit of the sea and the southern charm of their origins. From Coastal Calm to Seaweed & Sea Salt, each scent tells a story and evokes a sense of place, making them truly unique.
What sets Old Whaling Company apart is not just the quality of their products but the care and intention behind them. The company maintains high standards for production and ingredients, ensuring that every item is crafted with the utmost care.
Old Whaling Company’s journey began with their bar soaps, a product that remains a flagship of their collection. Known for the signature hand-whisked wave on top, these soaps have been a staple since the company's inception. Over time, the product line continues to make waves. The company expanded to include body butters and bath bombs, which have become stars in their own right, with each product continuing to reflect the company's coastal roots and dedication to quality, providing a sensory escape that echoes the tranquility of the sea.
From the scenery and adventure to the fashion and style, there’s simply nothing like the unique beach towns found all along the southern coast. Pine and Palm is your go-to destination for all things coastal, so come along and see what makes the coastal cities of the South so spectacular. More about P&P ->
